In the Haliburton Highlands there is a special place where artists come to create. Halls Island on Koshlong Lake has a story, many stories in fact.
Author, poet and editor, Ruth E. Walker will tell the story of Halls Island Artist Residency, highlight various artists who've been there through the residency, and describe the impact on the artists and on our local community. In the summer of 2023, local artists Sandi Luck, Nadine Papp and Wendy Wood shared a residency on Halls Island. Together they worked on eco-dying and eco-printing using the vegetative matter from the island. They will talk about their work and display some of the beautifully dyed fiber and eco-prints created during their time there. Sandra Bouza, another Halls Island alumni and wonderfully talented singer/songwriter will be here to share her incredible story and perform a few of her songs.
Ruth E. Walker, is the founding Co-chair of Halls Island Artist Residency Management Committee in Haliburton, and a member of the Arts Council Haliburton Highlands. Ruth lives and writes in Oshawa, Ontario and at her riverside cottage in Minden Hills.
Sandi Luck has dabbled in all things fiber since childhood, progressing from sewing doll clothes to her own wardrobe, soft furnishings, decorative embroidery and weaving. She specializes in felt making, stitched textiles, and natural dye using wet felting techniques to create accessories.
Nadine Papp is a textile artist living and creating in Minden Hills Ontario and was also a student in the ‘first ever’ textile/fibre arts course at the Haliburton School of The Arts. She is a perpetual student who is always looking at new techniques to incorporate into her pieces. Working with various artists and participating in many different fibre/textile workshops over the years has inspired her to keep testing, moving and changing her approach, working with different organic and inorganic materials.
Wendy Wood has been painting for more than 30 years and weaving for more than 20. She has participated in many group and solo shows over the years. She now works from her studio in the Haliburton Highlands, Ontario, where just looking out of her studio window is an inspiration for what she does be it with a paint brush or a skein of yarn.
Sandra Bouza has been singing and playing guitar from a very young age. Growing up variously in Canada and Spain, her influences are broad. During a residency at Halls Island she wrote most of the material for her critically acclaimed album, ’A Sound in the Dark.’ “This record is truly me - more me than I have ever been able to give up to this point. With the new songs, I share more of myself than I have ever been able to do before.” If you would like to hear more of Sandra’s music, she will be performing a house concert at Oakview Coliving on April 11.
